Congregational Care > Baptism

It is our belief that baptism is an act of obedience, showing God and others that you have chosen Christ as your personal savior. Highland Park pastors baptize through immersion during our weekend worship services.

When you are ready to be baptized, please pick up and fill out a "Baptism Interview" form from the Welcome Center or contact the church office to have one mailed or emailed to you. Simply return the form to the church office, or the pastor of your choice, and request an interview with that pastor.

Still have questions?

Why be baptized?

Because you want to follow Christ's example (Mark 1.9)
• Because Christ commanded it (Matthew 28.19-20)
• Because it shows you are a believer (Acts 18.8)
• Because obeying Christ's command shows you know Him (1John 2.3)

What is the meaning of baptism?

• It is a symbol of Christ's burial and resurrection (1 Corinthians 15.3,4; Colossians 2.12)
• It is a symbol of your new life as a Christian (2 Corinthians 5.17; Romans 6.4)
Baptism does not make you a believer; it shows that you already are one! Baptism does not "save" you. Only your faith in
• Christ does that. Baptism is like a wedding ring - it's the outward symbol of the commitment you made in your heart. (Ephesians 2.8,9)

How are we to be baptized?

• Like Jesus was baptized - by being immersed in water (Matthew 3.16)
• Every baptism in the Bible was by immersion under water (Acts 8.38,39)
• The word "baptize" literally means "to dip under water"
• It is the best way to picture a burial and resurrection, and the founders of denominations agree:
Martin Luther - "I would have those who are to be baptized to be entirely immersed as the Word
     imparts and the mystery signifies."
John Calvin - "The word 'baptize' signifies to immerse. It is certain that immersion was the
     practice of the ancient church."
John Wesley - "Buried with Him, alluding to baptizing by immersion according to the custom
     of the first church."

Who should be baptized?

Every person who has made the decision to believe in Christ (Acts 2.41; Acts 8.12; Acts 8.13)
The one requirement for baptism is belief in Christ! We do not baptize children until they are old enough to understand and believe (read here about Child Dedication).

When are we to be baptized?

As soon as you have believed! You shouldn't delay. (Acts 2.41; Acts 8.36-39)

What about being baptized twice?

A careful study of the New Testament reveals that people were only baptized after they volitionally invited Christ into their lives as Savior and Lord. It is a personal decision. Being baptized a second time, this time by immersion reflects your desire to be baptized following the New Testament example.

Can my family be baptized together?

Yes! If each family member understands fully the meaning of baptism, and each one has personally placed his/her trust in Christ for salvation, we encourage families to be baptized at the same time. It is a wonderful expression of commitment.

Will I have to say anything?

No. At the beginnign of the baptism service, the pastor will briefly explain the meaning of baptism. The pastor will introduce you, briefly share some of your conversion experience and then baptize you. People are encouraged to share personally but it is not required.

God will bless you as you demonstrate your faith in Christ!
